Chapter Three

Professor Ryan sipped bitter black coffee, driving home from the night’s class. He fooled himself into believing a major lie. I’m over Ms. Heart. I’ve successfully handed her off to Master Styles, freeing me from taking things too far. She’s just a kid. At eighteen I would’ve humped anything with a warm hole...animals included. She’d never love me. My chance at love died long ago, he cryptically thought.

He truly believed his lie, until arriving at the freeway exit to Emma’s house. An unseen force overtook his body, urging him to turn at the exit. Somehow, he could hear her voice luring him like a siren into depths of sea.

“No!” he shouted, gripping the steering wheel with both hands tightly. “You’re over this, damn you!” he shouted, fighting a battle within himself. Passing it by, he managed to relax, when suddenly he jerked the wheel, crossing the grass median onto the exit ramp.

After a few honking cars and middle fingers, he was forced to accept his fate. Professor Ryan was headed to Emma’s house.

Knowing the way like a human GPS, he arrived at her home. Since stalking was not an attractive quality in a mate, he parked a few houses down. Just staring at her abode, unleashed a massive sigh. The act alone defied everything he’d accomplished in the night’s class. In one erratic move, he disproved the lie he’d just told himself.

“I’m a nutcase!” he shouted, putting the car in drive. Suddenly, a sight hit his eyes. Emma, who’d recently arrived from class, exited her home. She chased Kyle, who exited first.

Professor Ryan paused, watching them closely. He couldn’t hear or read their lips in the distance, though their body language spoke volumes. It was clear they were arguing.

Emma appeared to start crying, obviously begging forgiveness with her clasped hands. Kyle was yelling directly in her face. Mark Ryan’s eyes shifted towards the house. A glint of lamp light slithered through parted shades. Although he’d only seen the man once before, it was obvious he was watching. Whatever Stepfather Ray’s intention, it was clearly not good.

Returning his attention to the unhappy couple, Mr. Ryan saw Emma hit her knees. She attempted to block Kyle’s exit path. As he darted around her, she grabbed his arm. A desperate look painted her face. It was as if her tiny self-worth was leaving with him.

Anger overcame Kyle, as no girl was going to strong arm him. He gripped her arm back, squeezing it. Pain covered her face.

“You bastard!” Professor Ryan shouted, readying to exit the car and beat the boy. However, he realized it would only make things worse. I’m not even supposed to be here. I’ll be out of a job and in jail.

Withholding his desire to defend her, he forced himself to watch Kyle continue to squeeze her arm. Emma mouthed the words, “Stop, you’re hurting me!”

“That’s it!” Mark Ryan said, opening his car door. Before he could move, another man took his place.

Stepfather Ray barreled outside, shouting at Kyle. The professor quickly got back inside, though could hear the man’s harsh voice.
